About Me
I am Samuel Baker BYANSI - an investigative journalist, press freedom and human rights defender, author, researcher, and founder of investigative tools and platforms. With over a decade of experience reporting from the Great Lakes region and Central Africa, particularly Rwanda, my work centers on uncovering abuses of power, defending freedom of expression, and pushing for systemic accountability.
Driven by a commitment to truth, justice, and transparency, I have reported extensively on human rights violations, political repression, corruption, democracy, conflict, and security issues.
My mission is to amplify the voices of ordinary people impacted by extraordinary power and contribute to more just and open societies.

About My Work
Leadership & Investigative Impact
I am the Co-founder of M28 Investigates, a nonprofit newsroom dedicated to advancing investigative journalism across Sub-Saharan Africa. Through M28, I have led major investigations, contributed to public interest litigation, and developed innovative journalism training programs. Our work has influenced policy reforms, held power to account, and trained over 200 journalists in data journalism, digital safety, and cross-border investigative techniques.
In Rwanda and beyond, I have played a central role in challenging repressive laws and promoting legal protections for journalists and whistleblowers. My public interest litigation at the Rwanda Supreme Court and the East African Court of Justice has helped reshape freedom of expression norms in the region.
Founder of OSINT Analytica
I am also the founder of OSINT Analytica, a next-generation open-source intelligence (OSINT) and digital relationship-mapping platform designed to empower investigators, analysts, and journalists. OSINT Analytica helps users uncover hidden connections across digital ecosystems, from threat actors and fraud networks to surveillance systems and political influence operations.
Built with privacy, customization, and accessibility in mind, OSINT Analytica integrates public and private data sources into a visual graph-based interface. Our mission is to democratize investigative intelligence and equip users to transform raw data into actionable insight - ethically, securely, and efficiently.

My work has received international recognition:
· 2025 Difference Day Honorary Title for Freedom of Expression - Brussels University Alliance (Université Libre de Bruxelles and Vrije Universiteit Brussel)
· Featured speaker at Conferentie Onderzoeksjournalistiek, Data SKUP, and other international journalism forums
· Contributor to major collaborative investigations, including Rwanda Classified with Forbidden Stories, which Investigated Kagame’s repressive regime and the suspicious death of journalist John Williams Ntwali.
· Referenced by the Global Investigative Journalism Network (GIJN) and supported by leading global foundations
· I am a member of “The Network of African Investigative Reporters and Editors”
From Investigative Journalism to International Law and Criminology
I am currently expanding my expertise into international law, criminology and justice systems analysis, focusing on the Great Lakes and Central Africa. This new direction builds on my fieldwork and aims to deepen my understanding of how state power, law enforcement, and digital repression intersect with justice, security, and public trust.
My long-term goal is to work at the nexus of investigation, intelligence, and international justice, contributing to institutions such as the ICC, EUROPOL, INTERPOL, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) and global human rights bodies.
Author: From Watchdogs to Traitors
I am the author of From Watchdogs to Traitors: The Less You Know, the More You Believe, a deeply personal and investigative account of press repression, disinformation, and the cost of truth-telling in Rwanda. The book exposes the mechanisms behind authoritarian media control, explores the historical evolution of Rwandan journalism, and reflects on my own journey through censorship, arrest, and resilience.
Through investigative storytelling, systems-focused research, and the development of open-source tools, I remain committed to exposing injustice, challenging impunity, and building new frameworks for accountability in the digital and real world.
