Samuel Baker BYANSI

I am a journalist, Press Freedom and Human rights defender, Author and Researcher. My focus is on Africa, the Great Lakes Region, Rwanda in particular. Passionate about reporting on issues that impact ordinary people. My reporting areas of interest are human rights, Politics, security, corruption and wars.  I also advocate for press freedom and freedom of expression, with resolute commitment to social justice, I devoted my career to shedding light on vital issues and championing the rights of marginalized communities.

As an investigative journalist, I fearlessly delves into intricate narratives, unearthing concealed truths, and exposing corruption. Beyond my impactful journalism, I actively engages in public interest litigations, challenging laws that hinder press freedom and freedom of expression.

Demonstrating remarkable courage, I seek to dismantle oppressive legislation through legal channels, advocating for journalists and the public’s right to access information freely and without fear and also to the use of Legal frameworks to hold the powerful accountable.

My tireless efforts have been acknowledged, with significant contributions as a petitioner in the Rwanda Supreme Court and the East African Court of Justice. My work has shaped legal precedents and safeguarded fundamental rights within the region, driving towards a more transparent and accountable society.

 

I am the co-founder of M28 Investigates / Unité M28, a non-profit media outlet Supporting Investigative Journalism in Sub-Saharan Africa. Our programs “Trainings and Capacity Building, Collaborative Reporting, Learning Lab, Advocacy and Research” are designed to support and equip Students, Journalists and Newsrooms in the region with the tools, resources and skills needed to practice investigative journalism in defense of the public interest and also expose abuses of power and betrayals of the public trust by government, business, and other institutions, using the  moral force of investigative journalism to spur reform through the sustained spotlighting of wrongdoing. My work stands as a beacon of hope, igniting positive change, and fostering a more inclusive and just society.
